The grapes

Carignan

Best known in Languedoc-Roussillon, Priorat, Sardinia

A sturdy Mediterranean red grape that comes into its own from old, low-yielding vines. Dark fruit, spice and a savoury, earthy core with good acidity. In Rioja it goes by the name Mazuelo.

País

Best known in Maule, Itata, Bío Bío

One of the oldest grapes in the Americas, brought to Chile centuries ago. Light, rustic and juicy, with red fruit and earthy notes. Old, dry-farmed vines are behind a quiet revival.

Where it's from

Colchagua Valley

Chile

Part of the Rapel Valley, south of Santiago, and one of Chile's best-known red wine regions. Warm and sunny, it suits full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Syrah and Malbec. Vineyards nearer the coast are now adding fresher styles too. Rich, ripe, polished reds with real crowd appeal.
