What it tastes like

Suertes del Marqués 7 Fuentes 2020 is a beautifully structured red with aromas of ripe dark fruits, including blackberries and plums, along with hints of violets, herbs, and a touch of volcanic minerality. The palate is medium-bodied and vibrant, with firm tannins and a refreshing acidity that supports the dark fruit flavors. The wine's complexity is enhanced by subtle notes of spice, smoke, and earth, providing depth without overpowering the fruit. The finish is long, with lingering dark fruit and a mineral edge, showcasing the wine's origin.

Ideal with roasted meats such as lamb or beef, as well as grilled pork, game, or hearty stews. It also pairs beautifully with Spanish dishes like paella, chorizo, or charcuterie. The wine's structure and acidity make it a great match for grilled vegetables, aged cheeses like Manchego or Mahón, and earthy dishes like mushroom risotto or truffle-based recipes.

The grapes

Listán Negro

Best known in Tenerife, Canary Islands

The main red grape of the Canary Islands. Light to medium body, red fruit, a peppery spice and a smoky volcanic note. Fresh and distinctive, often compared to cool-climate reds.

Tintilla

Best known in Cádiz, Andalusia

A red grape from Andalusia, rescued from near extinction by growers around Cádiz. Deep colour, dark fruit and a fresh, slightly spicy finish. Used for still reds and blends, and a nice reminder that this sherry country also does red wine.

Where it's from

Canary Islands

Spain

Volcanic islands off north-west Africa, under the Spanish flag. Black ash soils, Atlantic winds and old ungrafted vines make wines unlike anywhere else. Listán Negro gives smoky, peppery reds; Malvasía and Listán Blanco make salty, mineral whites. On Lanzarote, vines grow in hollows dug into the ash. Thrilling stuff.

The story behind it

Suertes del Marqués is a winery located in the northern part of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, where the vineyards are planted on the island's volcanic soils. The 7 Fuentes cuvée is a blend of native grape varieties, primarily Listán Negro, grown at high altitudes where the climate is cool, providing a natural balance between freshness and complexity. This wine is a great example of how the unique terroir of the Canary Islands can produce wines with depth, minerality, and balance.

If you like these, you'll love this: If you enjoy wines from volcanic regions such as Etna in Sicily or Santorini in Greece, or if you appreciate the complexity and minerality of wines from the Rhône Valley or Rioja, Suertes del Marqués 7 Fuentes 2020 will appeal to you. It's perfect for those who enjoy wines with a distinct sense of place, depth, and balance.
