The grapes

Clairette Blanche

Best known in Southern Rhône, Languedoc, South Africa

An old Mediterranean white grape with a soft, floral character. Peach, fennel and white flowers, with a gentle texture. Used in Southern Rhône blends and for the sparkling Clairette de Die.

Grenache Blanc

Best known in Southern Rhône, Roussillon

The white version of Grenache. Rich and rounded, with green apple, pear and fresh herbs, and enough body to stand up to food. A key part of white blends in the Southern Rhône and Roussillon, where it adds weight and gentle fruit.

Roussanne

Best known in Rhône, Savoie, Languedoc

An aromatic Rhône white grape. Herbal tea, pear and honey, with a rich, textured body and good freshness. Often blended with Marsanne, it is capable of ageing well, and in Savoie it is known locally as Bergeron.

Where it's from

France

Split in two by character. North: intense Syrah at Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie; floral Viognier at Condrieu. South: sun-soaked Grenache blends, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, rosé from Tavel. A region of contrasts and consistent brilliance.
