What it tastes like

Complex and layered Chenin Blanc- yellow orchard fruit (apple, peach), honeyed tones, florals, and dried herbs. There's spiciness, a saline minerality and a rich, rounded texture.

Lovely with

  • GnocchiSage butter · Gorgonzola sauce · Pesto
  • Soft cheeseBrie · Camembert · Baked Vacherin
  • PoultryChristmas turkey · Guinea fowl · Poussin

Great with creamy cheeses, seafood in butter sauce, roasted root vegetables, or richer white meats. Also lovely solo as a contemplative glass.

The grape

Chenin Blanc

Best known in Loire Valley, South Africa

A brilliant shape-shifter. Bone-dry, off-dry, sweet or sparkling, always with vivid acidity running through it. Apple, quince, honey and a waxy texture, with the best examples from the Loire and South Africa ageing gracefully for many years.

Where it's from

Western Cape

South Africa

South Africa's wine heartland, encompassing everything from the cool coastal valleys to the warmer inland sites. Extraordinarily diverse in climate and soil: a single appellation that contains multitudes — from delicate Elgin Pinot to muscular Swartland reds.

The story behind it

From a 1956 planting, 67-year-old bush vines in Paarl. Whole-bunch pressed, spontaneously fermented in neutral oak, no malolactic in some descriptions; aged for10 months in older 600 L barrels.

If you like these, you'll love this: Best for lovers of textured, serious whites—like fine Loire Chenins, or Burgundian whites with age and soul.
