What it tastes like

A beautiful ruby-red color. Plenty of dark fruit and floral notes on the nose, but also a certain spiciness with pepper and coriander. This is typical of Syrah. The palate is elegant and concentrated, and in every way, this is a great wine.

Light Full

Lovely with

  • DuckPan-roast breast · Confit · Peking duck
  • Game meatsPheasant · Partridge · Game pie
  • LambRoast leg · Rack of lamb · Slow shoulder
  • Roasted vegetablesRoot vegetables · Squash · Tray bakes

Pairs beautifully with lamb (especially herb roasted), grilled duck, dishes with olives or capers, charred vegetables, or anything with a touch of smoke or spice.

The grape

Syrah

Best known in Northern Rhône, Washington State

A dark, spicy red grape. Blackberry, black pepper, smoked meat and violets, with firm structure. Elegant and savoury in the Northern Rhône, in places like Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie; in Australia the same grape goes by Shiraz.

Where it's from

Western Cape

South Africa

South Africa's wine heartland, encompassing everything from the cool coastal valleys to the warmer inland sites. Extraordinarily diverse in climate and soil: a single appellation that contains multitudes — from delicate Elgin Pinot to muscular Swartland reds.

The story behind it

100% Syrah from two vineyard parcels near the Cape Town coast / Noordhoek. 50%whole-bunch fermentation. After harvest, the grapes are fermented and aged in 600-liter French oak barrels for 11 months. This is followed by a further 9 months in egg-shaped wooden vats. Minimal intervention is performed during vinification to ensure the terroir is reflected in the wines as much as possible.

If you like these, you'll love this: If you enjoy elegant, coastal Syrahs or lighter-handed styles of Syrah think of wines like Cornas with finesse, or cooler climate California Syrah that lean floral, spicy and mineral.
