What it tastes like

Dark, rich and perfumed – blackberry, blue fruit and dried herbs with cracked pepper and floral perfume. There's a saline, almost maritime twinge on the finish. Tannins are supple, and the texture is creamy with real finesse.

Light Full

Lovely with

  • BBQ meatsRibs · Burgers · Smoky brisket
  • SteakRibeye · Côte de boeuf · Steak frites
  • VenisonVenison loin · Haunch · Venison stew

Pairs well with grilled red meat, game, or spiced dishes — ideal with food that has a bit of char or smoke. Also great to enjoy with aged cheeses.

The grapes

Syrah

Best known in Northern Rhône, Washington State

A dark, spicy red grape. Blackberry, black pepper, smoked meat and violets, with firm structure. Elegant and savoury in the Northern Rhône, in places like Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie; in Australia the same grape goes by Shiraz.

Touriga Nacional

Best known in Douro, Dão

Portugal's flagship red grape. Intense blackberry, violet and floral notes, with firm tannins and real concentration. It is key to Port and to many of the country's best dry reds, especially from the Douro and Dão.

Where it's from

Western Cape

South Africa

South Africa's wine heartland, encompassing everything from the cool coastal valleys to the warmer inland sites. Extraordinarily diverse in climate and soil: a single appellation that contains multitudes — from delicate Elgin Pinot to muscular Swartland reds.

The story behind it

Grapes from dry-farmed bush vines in Malgas, Western Cape. After harvest, grapes are fermented and aged in new and old large wooden barrels of French oak. Lagering for 11 months. 90% of the grapes is destemmed and both grapes are harvested at the same time.

If you like these, you'll love this: If you enjoy complex Rhône-style reds, or elegant Syrah/Touriga blends with both fruit and savoury depth, this is right up your alley — think wines that combine power with finesse.
