The grapes

Muscadelle

Best known in Bordeaux, Rutherglen

A minor Bordeaux white grape with a floral, grapey character. Used in small amounts in Sauternes and dry white blends to add perfume. In north-east Victoria in Australia it makes rich, fortified Topaque with toffee and tea notes.

Sauvignon Blanc

Best known in Loire Valley, Marlborough, Bordeaux

Zesty, aromatic and refreshing. Grapefruit, gooseberry, cut grass and passion fruit, with crisp acidity. Mineral and restrained in Sancerre and the Loire, punchy and tropical in Marlborough, and blended with Sémillon in Bordeaux.

Sémillon

Best known in Bordeaux, Hunter Valley

A rich white grape with a waxy texture. Lemon, honey and lanolin, gaining toasty complexity with age. It is key to sweet Sauternes and dry white Bordeaux, and in the Hunter Valley makes light, lemony whites that age remarkably well.

Where it's from

Bordeaux

France

The world's most famous wine region. Left bank: Cabernet-led, structured, age-worthy. Right bank: Merlot-forward, plush, generous. The greatest châteaux set the global benchmark for red wine; the Entre-Deux-Mers makes brilliant dry whites.
