The grapes

Chardonnay

Best known in Burgundy, Champagne, California

The world's most versatile white grape. Crisp, mineral and citrusy in cool places like Chablis; rich, creamy and toasty when oak-aged in warmer spots. It is also a key grape in Champagne.

Chenin Blanc

Best known in Loire Valley, South Africa

A brilliant shape-shifter. Bone-dry, off-dry, sweet or sparkling, always with vivid acidity running through it. Apple, quince, honey and a waxy texture, with the best examples from the Loire and South Africa ageing gracefully for many years.

Muscat

Best known in Alsace, Southern France, Italy, Spain

A large family of grapes that taste unmistakably of fresh grapes. Floral, perfumed and often sweet, though dry versions exist. It ranges from light, fizzy Moscato to rich fortified wines.

Where it's from

South Africa

The Napa Valley of South Africa — beautiful, prestigious, home to many of the country's most celebrated estates. Granite and sandstone soils, cooling maritime influence from False Bay, and a commitment to Cabernet and Chenin Blanc that results in some of the southern hemisphere's finest wines.
