What it tastes like

The wine is an intense deep red colour, showing distinctive ripe red fruit aromas of plums and cherries with delicate violet nuances and hints of dried fruit. Smooth and full in the mouth, the wine is remarkably fresh and appealing.

The grape

Malbec

Best known in Mendoza, Cahors

Argentina's signature red. Dark plum, blackberry and violets, with a soft, velvety texture that makes it very easy to like, with high-altitude Mendoza vineyards keeping it fresh. In its original home, Cahors, it makes firmer, darker and more rustic wines.

Where it's from

Patagonia

Argentina

Argentina's southern frontier, centred on Neuquén and Río Negro. Cooler than Mendoza, with strong winds and big swings between day and night temperatures. The result is fresher Malbec, elegant Pinot Noir and crisp whites. A newer, exciting side of Argentine wine.

Patagonia

Meet the producer

Alpataco

Patagonia, Argentina

Alpataco comes from Bodega Familia Schroeder in Patagonia, Argentina, a land of dry weather, snowmelt rivers and cool nights. Grapes are picked by hand and the winery works by gravity flow. We stock their Malbec Selection.

The story behind it

Bodega Familia Schroeder is the result of a pioneer family's effort that made their dream come true. Located in Patagonia, the estate is a land of extremes. Dry weather, rivers carrying snowmelt water, cool nights and long summer days characterise the climate here. A state of the art gravity flow winery completes the set up in one of the worlds most exciting new wine regions.    Manually harvested grapes undergo a two day cold soak, then alcoholic fermentation over 12 days. A period of post-fermentation maceration takes place for three days to fully integrate the tannins. Malolactic fermentation takes place spontaneously in stainless steel where the wine is aged on the lees before bottling.
