The grapes

Chardonnay

Best known in Burgundy, Champagne, California

The world's most versatile white grape. Crisp, mineral and citrusy in cool places like Chablis; rich, creamy and toasty when oak-aged in warmer spots. It is also a key grape in Champagne.

Pinot Blanc

Best known in Alsace, Alto Adige, Germany

A gentle white grape from the Pinot family. Soft and round, with apple, pear and almond, and moderate acidity. Easy-going and food-friendly, it is widely used in sparkling wines and in Germany and Austria goes by the name Weissburgunder.

Trebbiano

Best known in Italy

One of Italy's most widely planted white grapes. Light, fresh and fairly neutral, with crisp acidity and gentle citrus. Simple in most places, but more interesting from good growers in Abruzzo, and in France it is called Ugni Blanc.

Where it's from

Veneto

Italy

Home to Prosecco, Soave, Valpolicella and Amarone. The region produces vast quantities of wine — much of it ordinary, some of it extraordinary. Amarone della Valpolicella (dried grapes, intense, powerful) is one of Italy's truly great wines.

Veneto

A historic estate in Veneto. Love Wine stocks a wide spread from them: Bardolino, Soave Classico, Lugana, Valpolicella Ripasso and an Amarone from three Classico vineyards. Hand-harvested fruit and a clear sense of place run through the range.
