Gentle Folk Vin de Sofa
PRODUCER: A love of wine, food and growing things eventually led Gareth and Rainbo away from a vastly different background involving scuba gear and seaweed. Their winery is situated in the Basket Range of the Adelaide Hills where they try to intervene as little as possible in the growing and making of the wines. They farm a number of small parcels in Basket Range, Forest Range and Ashton. They don’t like to define their styles or wine making techniques, just make wine in the way they feel is right for the grapes and season and most importantly, with maximum drinkability and enjoyment in mind.
WINEMAKING: A blend of Pinot noir and Pinot gris from Scary Gully Vineyard in Forest Range. Great to have Pinot gris back in the blend for 2019. Scary Gully is a powerful site in terms of wine style, and to be able to produce a light easy drinking red has been a journey in winemaking and farming. The use of semi-carbonic allows us to ‘infuse’ flavours from the grapes as opposed to extract them through pigeage or pumpovers, and thus, keep the wine as delicate as possible. The use of whole bunches also helps to elevate the pH and soften out the wine even though we pick the grapes super early and with some serious acid.
TASTING NOTES: In the makers’ words - is a “no-bullshit wine.” A blend of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, this is a super-light red wine that has a floral twist, kind of like those fancy deserts that have flower petals in them. It’s a wine that heightens energy and brings laughter: a wine for reunions amongst friends, by the bucketload.
