The grapes

Grenache Blanc

Best known in Southern Rhône, Roussillon

The white version of Grenache. Rich and rounded, with green apple, pear and fresh herbs, and enough body to stand up to food. A key part of white blends in the Southern Rhône and Roussillon, where it adds weight and gentle fruit.

Viognier

Best known in Northern Rhône, Languedoc

An aromatic Rhône white grape. Apricot, peach and honeysuckle, with a rich, almost oily texture and fairly low acidity. It is the grape of Condrieu, and in Côte-Rôtie a little is sometimes added to Syrah for perfume.

Where it's from

Languedoc-Roussillon

France

France's most exciting and under-appreciated wine region. Stretching along the Mediterranean coast from Nîmes to the Spanish border, it's a vast, diverse landscape of old Grenache and Carignan vines, ambitious small producers and extraordinary value.

Domaine Gayda

Languedoc-Roussillon, France

A Languedoc estate with a good story behind its flagship. Chemin de Moscou is named for a vineyard parcel and an old tree that Aéropostale pilots once used as a navigation beacon. Love Wine stocks eleven wines, from Sphère Syrah to that organic red.

The story behind it

Part of Gayda's “Flying Solo” range, made from estate-grown grapes on limestone–clay terraces near Carcassonne. Cold-fermented and aged on lees in stainless steel for purity and freshness

If you like these, you'll love this: A top pick for fans of crisp, fruit-driven blends like Picpoul, Albariño or New World Grenache Blanc.
