Ripe red/dark fruit aromas and that characteristic garrigue and pepper notes. Lovely softness in the mouth with velvety tannins and confit fruits building across the palate, hints of tobacco and leather and a nice spine of acidity from the Syrah as well as some spicy blackcurrant fruit.
Best known in Languedoc-Roussillon, Priorat, Sardinia
A sturdy Mediterranean red grape that comes into its own from old, low-yielding vines. Dark fruit, spice and a savoury, earthy core with good acidity. In Rioja it goes by the name Mazuelo.
Best known in Southern Rhône, McLaren Vale, Provence
Warm, generous and full of red fruit. Raspberry, strawberry, spice and a soft, ripe texture. The heart of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and many rosés; in Spain the same grape is called Garnacha.
Best known in Bandol, Southern Rhône, Spain
A dark, savoury red grape that loves Mediterranean heat. Blackberry, game, leather and herbs, with firm tannins and real depth. The star grape of Bandol and a key part of Southern Rhône blends; in Spain it is called Monastrell.
Best known in Northern Rhône, Washington State
A dark, spicy red grape. Blackberry, black pepper, smoked meat and violets, with firm structure. Elegant and savoury in the Northern Rhône, in places like Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie; in Australia the same grape goes by Shiraz.

Split in two by character. North: intense Syrah at Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie; floral Viognier at Condrieu. South: sun-soaked Grenache blends, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, rosé from Tavel. A region of contrasts and consistent brilliance.

Les Vignerons d'Estézargues is a co-operative near Avignon with an unusual approach. From 1995 its ten growers vinified separately, then moved to natural winemaking with no added yeast, filtering or fining. Denis Deschamps oversees the project.

Les Vignerons D' Estézargues takes a fundamentally different approach to the standard practices of cooperatives in France; starting in 1995 the ten different growers in this co-op began to vinify their wine separately and make single cuvées from their best plots. On the heels of the single cuvée evolution Les Vignerons D' Estézargues began to practice natural winemaking. Possibly one of the only co-ops in the world to do so, Les Vignerons D' Estézargues uses no external yeasts, no filtering, no fining and no enzymes are employed on the grapes during the winemaking process. Denis Deschamps is currently overseeing the whole project.
