The grapes

Cabernet Franc

Best known in Loire Valley, Bordeaux

Lighter and more fragrant than its famous offspring, Cabernet Sauvignon. Red berries, violets, graphite and a leafy freshness. In the Loire it shines on its own; in Bordeaux it adds perfume to the blend.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Best known in Bordeaux, Napa Valley, Coonawarra

The backbone of Bordeaux and the world's most famous red grape. Blackcurrant, cedar and firm tannins, with real ageing potential. Riper climates give plusher fruit; cooler ones more structure and leafy freshness.

Malbec

Best known in Mendoza, Cahors

Argentina's signature red. Dark plum, blackberry and violets, with a soft, velvety texture that makes it very easy to like, with high-altitude Mendoza vineyards keeping it fresh. In its original home, Cahors, it makes firmer, darker and more rustic wines.

Merlot

Best known in Bordeaux, Italy, Chile

Soft, round and approachable. Plum, black cherry and chocolate, with gentle tannins and a plush texture. It leads the blends of Bordeaux's Right Bank, including Pomerol and Saint-Émilion, and makes generous, easy-drinking reds all over the world.

Petit Verdot

Best known in Bordeaux, Australia, Spain

A Bordeaux blending grape used in small doses for colour, spice and structure. Deep violet, with blackcurrant, violets and firm tannins. In warmer places such as Australia and Spain it ripens fully and makes powerful wines on its own.
