The grapes

Cabernet Franc

Best known in Loire Valley, Bordeaux

Lighter and more fragrant than its famous offspring, Cabernet Sauvignon. Red berries, violets, graphite and a leafy freshness. In the Loire it shines on its own; in Bordeaux it adds perfume to the blend.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Best known in Bordeaux, Napa Valley, Coonawarra

The backbone of Bordeaux and the world's most famous red grape. Blackcurrant, cedar and firm tannins, with real ageing potential. Riper climates give plusher fruit; cooler ones more structure and leafy freshness.

Sangiovese

Best known in Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna

Italy's most important red grape. Sour cherry, tomato leaf, herbs and firm acidity, with tannins that love food. It is the grape behind Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and ranges from light and lively to deep and ageworthy.

Where it's from

Tuscany

Italy

Italy's most celebrated wine region. Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano — all Sangiovese, all distinct. The Super Tuscans broke the rules in the 1970s and created an entirely new style. Hills, cypress trees, and wine that belongs on the table.

The story behind it

Tignanello is a pioneering Super Tuscan wine, first produced in 1971 by Marchesi Antinori. The 2016 vintage is a blend of 80% Sangiovese, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Cabernet Franc, aged for 14-16 months in French and Hungarian oak barrels. This wine reflects the unique terroir of the Tignanello vineyard in Tuscany's Chianti Classico region.

If you like these, you'll love this: Fans of Bordeaux blends or other Super Tuscans like Sassicaia or Ornellaia will appreciate the elegance and complexity of Tignanello 2016.
