The grapes

Cabernet Sauvignon

Best known in Bordeaux, Napa Valley, Coonawarra

The backbone of Bordeaux and the world's most famous red grape. Blackcurrant, cedar and firm tannins, with real ageing potential. Riper climates give plusher fruit; cooler ones more structure and leafy freshness.

Merlot

Best known in Bordeaux, Italy, Chile

Soft, round and approachable. Plum, black cherry and chocolate, with gentle tannins and a plush texture. It leads the blends of Bordeaux's Right Bank, including Pomerol and Saint-Émilion, and makes generous, easy-drinking reds all over the world.

Where it's from

Bordeaux

France

The world's most famous wine region. Left bank: Cabernet-led, structured, age-worthy. Right bank: Merlot-forward, plush, generous. The greatest châteaux set the global benchmark for red wine; the Entre-Deux-Mers makes brilliant dry whites.
