What it tastes like

Layered, textured and quietly powerful. Citrus oil, fresh lemon and tangerine lead into beeswax, toasted hazelnut and subtle spice. There's a saline, mineral edge running all the way through, giving lift and precision to the creamy mid-palate.

Roast chicken with lemon and herbs, turbot, scallops, or richer seafood dishes. Also a brilliant wine for the table on its own — it evolves beautifully in the glass. Wine storyThis wine comes from three historic Franschhoek vineyards planted between 1902 and 1942, including tiny parcels of naturally mutated Semillon Gris and a touch of old-vine Muscat d'Alexandrie. Fermented in a mix of new French oak, concrete eggs and clay amphora, then aged for 14 months to build texture and complexity without heaviness. CellaringDrink now with decanting, or cellar confidently for 10–15 years. One of the Cape's most age-worthy whites.

The grape

Sémillon

Best known in Bordeaux, Hunter Valley

A rich white grape with a waxy texture. Lemon, honey and lanolin, gaining toasty complexity with age. It is key to sweet Sauternes and dry white Bordeaux, and in the Hunter Valley makes light, lemony whites that age remarkably well.

Where it's from

Franschhoek

South Africa

A beautiful valley ringed by mountains, east of Stellenbosch, settled by French Huguenots in the late 1600s. Known for Semillon, including some very old vines, plus Chardonnay, Cap Classique sparkling wine and Cabernet. Also one of the Cape's great food destinations. Elegant, well-made wines with heritage.
