Best known in Rioja, Ribera del Duero
Spain's great red grape. Cherry, plum, tobacco and leather, with smooth tannins, and oak ageing adds vanilla and spice. It is the heart of Rioja and Ribera del Duero, and in Portugal's Douro the same grape is called Tinta Roriz.
Spain
Spain's most famous wine region. Tempranillo-based reds — Crianza, Reserva, Gran Reserva — defined by their relationship with American and French oak. Traditional Rioja has a distinctive vanilla, coconut character; modern styles are more fruit-forward. Both can be magnificent.
