What it tastes like

Nose of green citrus and thatch, understated and haunting, very beautiful.  Palate goes like this Mineral, geoelectric storm of citrus oil and driving acidity, finishes with the arrogance of a matador flicking his muleta and driving the cold steel into your heart.

Light Full

Lovely with

  • LobsterGrilled lobster · Thermidor · Lobster roll
  • Roast chickenSunday roast · Herb-stuffed thighs
  • Roasted vegetablesRoot vegetables · Squash · Tray bakes
  • SeafoodFruits de mer · Fish stew · Paella

Pairs beautifully with seafood (ceviche, scallops), dishes with citrus or sweet-sour flavours or simply on its own when you want a contemplative white.

The grape

Chenin Blanc

Best known in Loire Valley, South Africa

A brilliant shape-shifter. Bone-dry, off-dry, sweet or sparkling, always with vivid acidity running through it. Apple, quince, honey and a waxy texture, with the best examples from the Loire and South Africa ageing gracefully for many years.

Where it's from

Swartland

South Africa

The heartland of South Africa's wine revolution. Old bush-vine Chenin Blanc, Cinsault and Syrah grown on schist and granite. The natural wine movement found its South African home here — producers like Eben Sadie and Chris Alheit have changed the global conversation about what South African wine can be.

Alheit Vineyards

Western Cape, South Africa

Alheit Vineyards makes minimal-intervention white wines in South Africa's Western Cape. Fruit is hand sorted and whole-bunch pressed, then fermented with wild yeast in cement eggs, foudres and old barrels. We stock a long list, including Cartology and Hemelrand.

The story behind it

The grapes were hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The juice is very lightly settled with no additions to the raw juice, wild fermentation in cement eggs, foudres, and old barrels of various sizes. Fermentation lasted for about one month. The wine was kept on lees for around 12 months, then rested in tank on fine lees without fining for a further five months prior to bottling. Very simple, careful winemaking.

If you like these, you'll love this: If you enjoy precise, mineral-Chenin styles (like Huilkrans, Nautical Dawn or top Loire Chenin), or wines that show terroir over oak, this is one to cellar.
