Ascheri Gavi di Gavi
PRODUCER: The Giacomo Ascheri Cellars originated in La Morra: in the early 19th century, the first vines were planted in that area, where a place called “Ascheri” still exists. Matteo Ascheri is an amusing, talented and outspoken winemaker in Piedmont, a man who makes a fantastic range of wines from a mixture of local and international grapes. In a region where value-for-money can be hard to come by, Matteo produces wines that deliver flavour, complexity and finesse at affordable prices. As with everything Matteo does, his winemaking ethos is clear; it is the expression of the vineyard, the grape and the climate that he is capturing, not his winemaking prowess. It works, and his wines express elegance and refinement that is often overlooked in today’s ‘instant fix’ world.
WINEMAKING: The vines are trained with the traditional Guyot simple system and the grapes are all picked by hand before being transported to the winery as quickly as possible. The vineyards are managed according to the principles of sustainable agriculture. The grapes are harvested in September, and are fermented for about 15 days at 20°C in stainless steel vats. Then the wine stays 4 months on the fine lees.
TASTING NOTE: This wine has a delicate pale straw colour with highlights of green. The fragrant fresh nose displays notes of a floral, green fruit character with a minerally undertone. The palate mirrors the nose with its fresh and delicate approach, dry and balanced this wine has a good length.
