Tyrrell's Hunter Valley Semillon 2019
- Low stock - 16 items left
The ‘baby brother’ to Tyrrell’s famous Vat 1 Semillon, the Hunter Valley Semillon is made to the same high standards that their flagship Shiraz receives. The grapes are sourced entirely from their HVD (Hunter Valley Distillery) Vineyard.
This wine is a one-off blend from the two best wines of the vintage, HVD “Signpost” and Belford. These two blocks were planted in 1908 and 1993 respectively, and are two of the iconic Semillon vineyards of the world. Both are dry grown and planted on sandy soils next to old creek beds, ideal for high quality Semillon.
The 2019 vintage in the Hunter Valley was another high quality year across all varieties and is a stellar follow up to 2018. Continued dry conditions meant cropping levels were slightly lower than normal however all of the fruit was in perfect condition.
WINEMAKING: The grapes were handpicked and sorted in the vineyard. Once arriving at the winery the fruit was very lightly crushed and pressed with a small percentage of stalks. After a relatively cool fermentation, the wine spent a minimal time on yeast lees before being bottled early to maintain its freshness. No oak fermentation or maturation.
TASTING NOTES: Bright, attractive green in colour, the nose shows intense citrus characters. The palate is expansive and powerful, hallmarks of a warmer vintage. Wonderful length and flavour with the pedigree of the vineyards showing through. A wine that defies the challenging vintage.
