PRODUCER: The story of Peter Franus – the person, the winery, the wine – may just be the Great American Wine Fairy Tale. It includes a man searching for a path who could not ignore his calling. It includes hard-earned lessons from a rung-by-rung climb up the wine ladder, and graceful and delicious wine born of experience, tradition and intuition. And, of course, it includes romance. From the day they made their first wine in 1987, their goal has always been the same – to produce delicious and reasonably priced wines that distinguish themselves with their unique character, richness, harmony and the genuine sense of the mountain and hillside vineyards they came from.
VINEYARDS: Our block of Cabernet rests on the hilltop ridge, grapes ripen evenly, sometimes a challenge in the mountains. Curiously enough, it sits adjacent to those 90-year-old Zinfandel vines, surely capturing some of the magic and energy of those vines.
TASTING NOTE: Youthful dark ruby in colour, the 2019 presents a vibrant and enticing medley of aromas—classic cassis, bay, white pepper, graphite, and dried herbs. The expansive and youthful palate reflects the nose with a structure perhaps a bit firmer than the 2018. The wine is opulent, focused, and seamless--held in check with a finish that lingers and surprises. Here is proof that mountain Cabernets can offer restraint and balance!
