PRODUCER: When does the apprentice become the master? Franco Lourens was the assistant winemaker at Alheit Family Wines in Walker Bay. This breathtakingly self-assured range, in almost a blink of an eye, placed Franco into the very top bracket of top-end New Wave SA producers. Franco is a leading light of South Africa’s New Wave and champion of old-vine Chenin, among others. From Chris’s cellar in Hemel-en-Aarde Franco has made some serious wines. I mean, these are impressive bottlings by any standard – powerful, concentrated, yet supremely elegant and finely detailed.
WINE MAKING: This wine is made from a single vineyard that was planted in 1977 situated in the Durbanville ward of cape town district. The vineyard consists of dry land bush vines, planted in dark decomposed shale soils situated roughly 10 km from the Atlantic Ocean. Gentle whole cluster pressed. Rough Settling. No yeast, acid, enzymes added. Wine Matured for 9 month in old french barrels. Unfined and coarse filtration. Vineyard is passionately farmed by Robert HL Starke.
The idea behind this wine is to tell a story about a specific site, soil and farmer.
TASTING NOTE: Stone fruit, naartjie and orange as well dried herbs, ginger and a slight waxy character. Rich and round on the palate with nicely integrated acidity and a gently savoury finish.
