PRODUCER: Ken Forrester represents the true pioneering spirit of the post-apartheid South African wine industry. Drawing on the examples of top Loire whites, he has used his uniquely placed Chenin vines to maximum effect and has single-handedly led a Chenin Blanc quality revolution. As a result these wines have achieved iconic status worldwide.
WINEMAKING: The Dirty Little Secret project came along in 2015 when 'The King of Chenin' himself, Ken Forrester, thought something different needed to be done with one of his most prized Piekenierskloof vineyards. Planted with unirrigated Chenin Blanc vines aging back to 1959, the plot held such promise that a side project to fully explore the terroir of this place was founded. Sitting at 650m above sea level on west facing slopes and planted to sandy soils of decomposed granite, these exceptional old bush vines produce fruit of incredible intensity.
To fashion a true tribute to the age and concentration of these vines, the decision was made to create a non-vintage blend aged in very old 400l oak barrels. Each year the barrels are added to, harvest after harvest, to produce this complex blend of four vintages from 2017 to 2020. The wine has been treated as gently as possible and is bottled unfined and unfiltered, so as to maintain the most character possible in the wine.
TASTING NOTE: Only seven barrels of this wine have been produced and the result is a wine that is somehow austere but rich, elegant and driven by a totally mineral core that holds all of the fruit and lasts forever on the palate. Crafted to age and gain complexity in the bottle, the wine is drinking now or can be laid down for up to ten years.
