PRODUCER: If you travel a couple of hours north from the Langhe in Northern Italy, high into the mountains in North Piedmont you can find ancient, complex terroirs, shaped by volcanic activity some 300 million years ago. The soils can be acidic, with a pH as low as 4, and often have a high iron content. In 2010 Cristiano Garella teamed up with old friend Giacomo Colombera, and his father Carlo to start a project. They now farm 9 hectares of vineyards in three different DOC. They work their vineyards sustainably.
WINEMAKING: In the winery, the grapes are fermented using natural yeasts, no additions are made other than a touch of sulphur, and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration. This Nebbiolo blend is fermented in stainless stain tanks with wild yeasts before being matured in neutral oak barriques for 11 months. The wines are fresh, pure and dangerously drinkable! Only 4,500 bottles are produced each year.
TASTING NOTE: Decanter / aerate if possible to really lift this wine in its young age. A pure, medium-bodied, red fruited wine showing signs of rusticity and brutishness that we love from these Italians. The Rosso casts a crimson-garnet robe followed by spicy aromas of pie cherries, ferrous earth, star anise and dried rose petals. It alternates waves of wild cherry and red currant fruit with ferrous minerals, underbrush and leather. Focused, vibrant, and totally soil transparent, she finishes with firm, dusty tannins and suggestions of finely ground white pepper, cinnamon bark, rose petals and button mushrooms. Perfect for big meat dishes, pizzas, pastas and recipes spotlighting mushrooms or buckwheat. Enjoy now and over the coming 5 to 7 years.
