Chateau Malartic Lagraviere Grand Cru Classe de Graves Rouge 2015
PRODUCER: Chateau Malartic Lagraviere, a Cru Classe De Graves, was previously owned by the Champagne house, Laurent- Perrier - in 1997 it was bought by a Belgian couple, Michele and Alfred-Alexandre Bonnie, whose son and daughter-in-law, Jean-Jacques and Severine, have now assumed control.
WINEMAKING: Designed with architect Bernard Mazières in 1998, the winery was one of the first to adopt a grape transport system entirely by gravity: after manual harvests and double sorting on vibrating tables, grapes are transported to the vats and then to the barrels only by gravity. The vat room is also highly innovative.
Its octagonal layout houses 20 stainless steel vats and 10 wooden ones, all conical and temperature-controlled. Being small, each one can accommodate the fruit from specific plots for individual vinification.
TASTING NOTES: Offering a dense, opulent style, this is an ambitious effort. Glowing deep crimson at its core, with a lighter purple rim, it is a modern style of Pessac-Léognan, which fits perfectly into the style of the 2015 vintage. More obviously fruity than one might expect of the appellation, it is ripe, with delicious blackberry on the nose and palate. Soft, integrated tannins and a lush, opulent finish complete the picture.
