PRODUCER:   For many years, Juan Cúneo Solari, the son of an Italian immigrant, dreamed of having his own vineyards in order to produce exceptional wines. In 1993, he finally founded his winery in the Casablanca Valley and named it Casas del Bosque. He was one of the first to plant in the area. Since then, the valley has seen a boom in popularity, and Casas del Bosque remains one of the few family-owned wineries.

WINEMAKING:   The grapes were carefully machine harvested at night. Upon arrival at the winery all grapes were first destemmed and crushed to stainless steel tanks where they were then left to cold soak for five days. Following this time, the free-run juice was drained by gravity from the tanks. The resulting juices were then left to cold settle for 4 days following which time 48% of the blend was gravity fed to a mixture of French oak barrels where it was fermented during a period of 25 days. The remaining 52% of the blend was ultra-cool fermented in stainless steel tanks. After fermentation had finished the barrels were sulphured at which point battonage (or manual lees stirring) was carried for ten months. After this the wine was gently nitrogen racked to tank at which point it was cold stabilised, filtered and bottled.

TASTING NOTES:    On the nose this wine shows intense notes of key lime, grapefruit and fresh ginger dominate with just a hint of salinity. In the mouth, bright flavours of ginger and citrus zest give way to a tight mineral backbone and good acidity. Delicious served chilled as an aperitif, or paired with light pasta dishes, salads or poultry.

Key Definitions

Either certified or practicing organic farming techniques are used in the production of the product. Organic farming presumes that no harmful pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and chemical fertilisers are allowed to grow the grapes. Research has shown that grapes are amongst other fruit that store those harmful substances, hence it is increasingly beneficial for your health to drink wines made from organic grapes. It also generally means no artificial or synthetic preservatives were used, no colours added and no agents added to alter the taste. If you are wondering, organic also means nothing genetically modified.

Vegan friendly, free from the use of any animal products in production.

Either certified or practicing Biodynamic techniques are employed in the production of the product. Biodynamic vineyards are generally practising organic as well. The main biodynamic concept is that the growers intend to create a self-sufficient environment that works, heals and becomes an organism in itself. Biodynamic winemaking is very similar to organic - minimal intervention, strict guidelines regarding enrichment and additives. They try to use recycled packaging and solar energy where possible. Wines from healthier vines, made without much extra ‘going on’ are expressive and represent the soil, region and winemaking style well.

Minimal Intervention

This is a philosophy employed by most Organic and Biodynamic producers. The idea is to employ a ‘hands-off’ approach in the wine-making process. This means, minimal or no additional sulphur, natural and indigenous yeasts are used and often the wines are unfined and unfiltered enabling the wine to express itself in its most natural form. Limited Allocation Wines that are limited and small production. Screw Cap Indicates wines with a screw cap closure.

Low Alcohol

WSET guidelines state that Red wines under 12.5% abv and white wines under 12% abv are classified as low alcohol. We also classify beers and ciders under 4.5% as low alcohol.

Alcohol Free

Alcohol free products are classifed as being 0.5% abv or lower.

Gluten Free

Gluten free products, free from the use of any gluten products in production.

Jersey Jersey

As good as I remember.

It was five years ago that we visited the Casa Del Bosque winery not far from Valparaiso in Chile. We enjoyed a tour of the vineyard, with a very informative commentary, before visiting the tasting room followed by an excellent al fresco lunch. I particularly enjoyed their carmenere, which to all intents was extinct in France, but rediscovered in Chile where some healthy vines had been imported in the belief that they were merlot stock. Carmenere thrives in Chile and Casas Del Bosque produces a fine example. We also loved the chardonnay. In fact we enjoyed it so much that I followed up with the English importer on my return and was delighted to discover they supplied A C Gallie, now Love Wine. It remains our favourite chardonnay and it is excellent value too.

An old favourite

We know this wine and the vineyard well. We visited the Casas del Bosque a few years ago when en route from Valparaiso to Santiago; we had a tour of the estate, enjoyed a wonderful lunch and sampled all their wines. It is a small estate and before leaving we enquired whether they exported to the UK. "Yes" was the reply and on further enquiry we established the name of the London shipper. On returning to Jersey I called the shipper and asked whether they exported to Jersey. "Yes" was the reply again, "We sell to A.C. Gallie in Jersey - do you know them". We have been enjoying Casas del Bosque wines from Love Wine ever since. We both particularly enjoy the chardonnay and I like the carmenere which, I believe is not quite as popular, but it is slightly unusual and possibly an acquired taste. It's well worth trying. We have recommended the Casas del Bosque chardonnay to many of our friends and often give a bottle as a present.
