PRODUCER: Telmo Rodríguez and his partner and friend Pablo Eguzkiza set up Compañia de Vinos Telmo Rodriguez in 1994. The project identifies old vineyards throughout Spain planted with native grape varieties, that they feel have potential. In 1998, while working at Telmo's family winery Remelluri in Rioja Alavesa, they started to buy old vineyard sites around the town of Lanciego. This was the catalyst for Bodega Lanzaga. Their aim is to rediscover the ‘true’ historic taste of Rioja that they believe can only be achieved from the best sites.
WINEMAKING: Farming on the Lanzaga estate is certified organic. They also buy grapes from some traditionally managed vineyards. Grapes are hand-picked into small boxes. Fermentation is with native yeasts in 6,500-8,500kg concrete tanks. The wine is then aged for around 12 months in a mix of old oak barrels and foudre. Wines are lightly filtered before bottling.
TASTING NOTE: Deep ruby. Dark berry and cherry liqueur aromas are sharpened by smoky mineral and cracked pepper flourishes. Offers ripe blackberry, bitter chocolate and espresso flavors that show good depth and a slightly jammy quality. Supple tannins build on a long, spicy finish that leaves a bitter cherry pit note behind.
