PRODUCER: In 2004, a lady came to Pieter's house (then also his office) to buy wine. She asked for anything but Shiraz. “I don’t drink Shiraz”, were her exact words. I poured her a glass of wine. She loved it and bought 3 cases. It was a straight Shiraz.
Having no indication of cultivar on the bottle, not only demands complete honesty when it comes to quality, but it allows the opportunity to introduce once-off limited runs of interesting wines. BLANKbottle is an honest brand that had no limitations when it comes to style, vintage, area or cultivars. Something for someone with an open mind and an adventurous heart.
WINEMAKING: Pieter is a huge fan of Swartland white blends. The image of South African wines has changed dramatically over the past 10 years and the Swartland played a huge part in this. Their wines, especially the Rhône-style white blends are top notch. They are fun, young, energetic and unique and started to gain international fame.
Blank Bottle Empire Strikes is a reference to the fact that Pieter feels Stellenbosch has been overlooked following the Swartland Revolution. The half red star represents the revolution and the black and white stripes Stellenbosch (The Empire) fighting back! If you must know it’s made from Verdelho (35%), Roussanne, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc. Some whole bunch fermentation in concrete eggs and amphora, which is new to Pieter, give it a touch of extra texture.
TASTING NOTES: Lots of fruit sweetness and ripeness, seemingly a little more traditional, but has that slightly wild element to it that defines BLANKbottle
