COCKTAIL: The exact origin of the Negroni is unclear. In 1919, an Italian first mixed the drink for Count Camillo Negroni, who asked the bartender to strengthen his favourite cocktail, an 'Americano' by replacing the soda for gin. The bartender then added a garnish of orange peel to signify that this was a different drink.
TASTING NOTES: When it comes to a classic drink to enjoy before a meal, few will satisfy your palate, quite like the famous Negroni. It is a sophisticated and straightforward aperitif featuring gin, red vermouth. For this batch, we’re returning to the more traditional Campari, which brings a darker, more broody feel. We’ve offset this somewhat by replacing Belsazar with the lighter Regal Rogue Vermouth. Look for a smooth mingling hint of clementine with a smokiness combined with the cherry and a spike of juniper in the background from the gin. Well balanced, you start with the sweetness of the vermouth on the tongue and immediately find botanicals and acidity in the middle, a refreshing juniper comes to the slightly bitter, clean finish with a lingering smooth texture.
METHOD: To finish, add to a mixing glass filled with ice, and stir until well-chilled. Strain into a rocks glass filled with large ice cubes and garnish with an orange twist.
