International Viognier Day!
Viognier is a textural white wine that originated in the historic appellation of Condrieu in southern France. Defined by its perfumed aromas, Viognier produces some of the greatest white wines in the world.
Recognised as one of the most influential producers of Viognier, Yalumba has set the date to shine a spotlight on this unique and delicious wine.
On the last Friday in April, Yalumba invites producers and enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate International Viognier Day.
Let’s find out a bit more about this variety…
Viognier is a grape variety once described in 1985 as being on the verge of extinction – but one which has enjoyed an impressive revival in the last few decades thanks to growing popularity in the New World.
In France, Viognier is the single permitted grape variety in the Rhône appellations of Condrieu and Château Grillet, which are located on the west bank of the Rhône, about 40 km south of Lyon. In the rest of the Rhône wine region whites, the grape is often blended with Roussanne, Marsanne, Grenache blanc, and Rolle.
In more recent times, the style has found favour across the Americas, South Africa and in Australia. It may not be ready to rival sauvignon blanc or chardonnay by volume, but with its natural aromatics that include notes of peach, pears and violets, it’s surely capable of turning some heads!
