Boekenhoutskloof 2023: the vintage, the vineyards & the wines
Some wineries chase headlines. Others quietly set the standard.
Boekenhoutskloof firmly sits in the second camp. For decades now, it has been one of South Africa’s most consistent fine-wine producers — not just for standout vintages, but for the reliability of quality across the range.
The 2023 vintage is a perfect example of why this matters.
The 2023 Vintage: Precision Over Power
Across the Cape, 2023 is being talked about as a high-quality, classically styled vintage. Conditions through the growing season were largely moderate, with good soil moisture and healthy canopies encouraging long, even ripening.
Rather than producing overtly ripe or exaggerated wines, 2023 delivered:
-
Natural freshness
-
Balanced alcohols
-
Clear site expression
-
Excellent structure for ageing
In short, it’s a vintage that favours restraint, purity and finesse — exactly where Boekenhoutskloof excels.
A Winery Built on Consistency
Boekenhoutskloof’s rise has been shaped by Marc Kent, one of the most influential figures in modern South African wine. Since the mid-1990s, he’s guided the estate to multiple Winery of the Year titles and an almost unmatched track record of top critical scores.
Alongside him is Gottfried Mocke, Chief Winemaker since 2015. Together, they combine deep vineyard knowledge with a clear philosophy: let the sites speak, and don’t overwork the wines.
That approach is written all over the 2023s.
The Wines
Boekenhoutskloof Semillon 2023 | Franschhoek
If there is one white wine that defines Boekenhoutskloof, it’s this.
The Semillon comes from Certified Heritage Vineyards in Franschhoek, with vines planted between 1902 and 1942 — among the oldest producing white-wine vines in South Africa. These deep-rooted old vines naturally limit yields, producing fruit with concentration, texture and remarkable natural balance.
The 2023 was fermented using a combination of new French oak barrels, concrete eggs and clay amphora, then aged gently to build complexity without heaviness.
The result is a wine that’s layered, saline and quietly powerful — citrus oil, beeswax, subtle spice and a long, mineral finish. It’s already compelling, but it’s built to evolve over a decade or more.
This is one of the Cape’s truly great white wines, and 2023 is a standout expression.
Boekenhoutskloof Syrah 2023 | Swartland
The Syrah sits at the crossroads of two iconic sites, with 90% of the fruit sourced from the Porseleinberg vineyard and the balance from the Goldmine farm in the Swartland.
Porseleinberg needs little introduction. Its schist-rich soils and extreme conditions produce Syrah of intensity, structure and unmistakable savoury character — and it has become one of South Africa’s most sought-after vineyard names.
In 2023, careful vineyard management through late-season heat spikes preserved freshness and perfume. Fermentation included a high proportion of whole bunches, and ageing took place in large-format oak to avoid overt wood influence.
The wine is aromatic, savoury and composed, with violet, fynbos, dark berry fruit and fine, grainy tannins. Less about power, more about balance — and all the better for it.
Boekenhoutskloof Franschhoek Cabernet Sauvignon 2023
Franschhoek Cabernet often flies under the radar, but in the right hands it produces wines of real elegance and longevity.
The 2023 Franschhoek Cabernet Sauvignon is the more aromatic and lifted of the Boekenhoutskloof Cabernet bottlings, helped by a measured inclusion of Cabernet Franc in the blend. New oak is present but carefully handled, supporting the fruit rather than dominating it.
Expect cassis, black cherry and dried herbs, framed by fine tannins and fresh acidity. It’s structured, but never heavy — a Cabernet built as much for the table as for the cellar.
In a vintage that rewards balance, this wine feels perfectly pitched.
Why the 2023s Matter
What makes the Boekenhoutskloof 2023 wines so compelling isn’t just critical acclaim — it’s how clearly they express:
-
Old vines
-
Top-tier vineyard sites
-
A restrained, confident winemaking philosophy
These are wines made to age gracefully, but also to be enjoyed along the way. They reward curiosity, patience and proper food.
