PRODUCER: TEMPOS Vega Sicilia was set up in 1982 by the Álvarez family, its current owner, when it purchased the legendary winery of the Ribera del Duero. The other companies would be added down through the years.
The Álvarez family's business project is based on two fundamental cornerstones: consistency of the quality of the product as a guarantee for the different vintages, and dedication to the client as a benchmark in its routine activity.
Both cornerstones have underpinned the development of the group and have enabled very solid growth both in terms of the production structure and of the distribution and positioning of the different wines. The group currently consists of 5 companies (Bodegas Vega Sicilia S.A, Bodegas y Viñedos Alión S.A., Bodegas y Viñedos Pintia S.A., Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia S.A. and Tokaj-Oremus Kft.), the first four in Spain and the fifth in Hungary.
WINEMAKING: Alión comes from a careful selection of terroirs dotted across the very best areas of the Ribera del Duero DO. These soils, which complement each other, along with the same winemaking process as Vega Sicilia, have given rise to wines with a firm structure.
2017 was the 'vintage of the frost' (April 28), but this affected us less than it could have, thanks to our policy of producing 25 % more than we need, and to the double pruning carried out in the winter.
In this drier and warmer vintage, the contribution of oak was reduced, using 72 % new barrel, 18 % used barrel and 10 % concrete, with a view to working on the tannin texture, on the one hand, and the freshness and journey of the wine, on the other.
TASTING NOTES: Lots of chocolate and berry with some coffee-bean and vanilla undertones. It’s full and layered with plenty of fruit, round tannins and pleasing complexity of smoked and toasted wood. Shows superb depth as well as energy on the impressively long finish.
