Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto 2018
PRODUCER: If Mario Incisa, creator of Sassicaia, was inspired by his great-uncle Leopoldo Incisa della Rocchetta, then his son Nicolò, director of Tenuta San Guido for forty years, has been motivated by Guidalberto della Gherardesca his great great great grandfather. The latter, who lived in the early nineteenth century in Bolgheri was a pioneer of modern agriculture, and is famous for having planted the cypress alley that inspired the poet Giosuè Carducci.
Nicolò Incisa explains that the choice of the name and creation of new wine in 2000:
"The wine was created for two reasons:
first of all, the desire to see what we could accomplish with Merlot, a grape that we had never used before; second, the desire to offer the consumer a wine which could be appreciated at a younger age compared to our veteran Sassicaia”.
WINEMAKING: Careful manual selection of grapes on a sorting table. Soft pressing and destemming of the bunches to prevent the cracking of the berries and excessive release of tannins. Alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature maintained around 26-28 ° C, without addition of external yeasts. The macerations of this vintage lasted about 12-15 days for Merlot and 10-13 days for the Cabernet Sauvignon. This
was made in order to limit the excessive release of tannins in a vintage richer in anthocyanins. Frequent pumpovers and délestages helped the aromatic expression of the musts. The malolactic fermentation begun in early November and was carried out in stainless steel vats. After that the musts were transferred into barriques for ageing.
The wine was mostly aged in French oak barrels and partially American oak barrels for 15 months.
TASTING NOTE: An impressive release that speaks volume of the pedigree of Tenuta San Guido’s wines. Guidalberto is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. A voluptuous nose charged with blackcurrant, black cherries, damson notes is rained in by mineral, almost balsamic hints of black olive, mint, tomato leaf and fresh black pepper. The exuberant nose of youth shouldn’t distract from the assertive and confident backbone that is clearly evident when the wine had time to open up in the glass. With every vintage Guidalberto is becoming more and more on its own, exhibiting all the purity and elegance typical of Sassicaia with a touch of vibrant irreverence.
