Savage Follow the Line Cinsault

PRODUCER: Duncan Savage is a very talented winemaker who's reputation was made at Cape Point where he has been making very serious wines for years. 'Savage' is his own venture where he discovers fascinating plots of great fruit and makes blends, each year slightly different, depending what he finds and cannot resist.
WINEMAKING: A Cinsault (plus 7% Syrah) carefully chosen from a number of high altitude and maritime vineyards around the Western Cape farmed by guys who are as passionate about the sites as Duncan is. In the cellar, vinification is very hands off - with such special sites, it would be a shame to blemish the essence of the terroir. Minimal new oak and large barrels, (all Burgundian) are the only ones used.
TASTING NOTE: Cinsault sourced from Darling, originally part of the Swartland but now its own administrative zone. Technically the blend is 93% Cinsault and 7% Syrah with the Syrah adding a bit of savouriness to the silken red fruit of the Cinsault. Darling Cinsault tends to bring an element of rose water to the profile compared to the spicier Paardeberg Cinsault. The nose is ripe and seductive, with fine red fruit lots of strawberries and soft macerated cherries, star anise and cinnamon. Real purity, elegance and finesse – seductive but carried gently and all about perfume with firm fine boned tannins. An excellent example of the kind of modern Cinsaults that are putting this historic, occasionally rustic grape variety back on the map. The name comes from the farmer’s instructions to Duncan, while lost and trying to find the vineyard… “just look up and follow the ****** line!!” Aged for nine months in two large foudres.
