PRODUCER: The story of Peter Franus – the person, the winery, the wine – may just be the Great American Wine Fairy Tale. It includes a man searching for a path who could not ignore his calling. It includes hard-earned lessons from a rung-by-rung climb up the wine ladder, and graceful and delicious wine born of experience, tradition and intuition. And, of course, it includes romance. From the day they made their first wine in 1987, their goal has always been the same – to produce delicious and reasonably priced wines that distinguish themselves with their unique character, richness, harmony and the genuine sense of the mountain and hillside vineyards they came from.
WINEMAKING: 2018 was a marvelous growing season. Beautiful spring conditions followed abundant rainfall in the winter, resulting in even fruit set. They couldn’t have asked for more ideal summer and fall weather-- moderate temperatures throughout. The only two things that put Peter slightly on edge during harvest is anticipating hot temperature spikes or rain. Neither occurred resulting in long hang time, beautiful and balanced fruit that they could pick at their leisure. Harvest began roughly 10 – 14 days later than the previous vintage.
TASTING NOTE: The nose is effusive with black cherry, ripe plum, hint of thyme, sweet oak, and rose petal and urges you to taste. The initially firm structure leads to a refreshing and complex mouth with black cherry, anise, and spice notes. The tannin, acid, and fruit balance is impeccable, always a hallmark of this wine. The lengthy finish is the icing on the cake, and the 2018 is poised to last many years.
